Editing in the preview

You can change values in a spreadsheet or rewrite a Word document directly in the preview. Edits stay in your preview until you save them to the file.

Edit spreadsheet cells

Type into any non-formula cell, in place or through the formula bar. Dependent formulas recalculate instantly, so you can test an assumption and watch the outputs move. Formula cells can't be edited here: change the inputs and let the formulas do their work, or ask the terminal to restructure a formula.

Save or reset a spreadsheet

Edited cells stay highlighted, and an "Unsaved changes" bar offers two actions:

• Save to file (⌥S / Alt+S): writes your edits into the file.
• Reset: discards them and returns to the saved state.

Until you press Save, edits exist only in your preview. Two situations refuse a save, and the second one clears your unsaved edits:

• The terminal is writing the file right now. Try again in a moment.
• The file changed since you opened it. The preview reloads the latest version and your unsaved edits are cleared with it; re-apply the ones you still want.

When you're editing alone, save periodically so a conflict can't clear much. When teammates are in the sheet with you, edits are shared as you make them and saving works differently: see Work on a file together.

Edit a Word document

A Word document opens ready to type in. Click where you want to write and start typing.

Every change you make is recorded as a tracked change under your name: text you add is colored, and text you delete is struck through rather than removed. Open the saved file in Word to accept or reject the changes there.

Save or discard a document

While you have unsaved work, the document's header reads "Unsaved changes" and offers two actions:

• Save: writes your edits into the file.
• Discard: throws them away and reloads the file. It arms first, reading "Discard edits?", so one click can't lose your work.

If the file changed while you were editing, the save is refused and your edits stay in the preview rather than being cleared. Refresh brings in the latest version once you've saved or discarded what's there, so you can take what you still want with you.

Closing the preview with unsaved edits offers Discard and close rather than closing straight away.
